Spot Reduction

Perhaps one of the most common myths in the world of fitness is spot reduction. This is the idea that you can choose where you want to lose weight. People think, If I work out my arms, I'll lose fat in my arms. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Think about it this way, when you eat food can you choose where you want that food to go?

Can you eat a meal and make that meal go straight to your arms? Of course not. Yet people still believe that working out a very specific area will cause fat loss in that area. Your body stores and loses fat gradually, and this fat will be distributed over your entire body.

While it’s true that, generally, men store more fat in their stomach (the classic beer belly), and women store more fat in their hips and thighs, there is still fat throughout your entire body. Losing fat is a whole body process, not pinpointed to one specific area. If you want to lose fat, use full body movements in your exercises and eat a diet that’s healthy and suitable to your lifestyle. Over time and with consistency, you will lose fat in the areas that you want.
